Gynecologic Oncology

Overview

Gynecologic cancer is cancer that afflicts the female reproductive organs.
The fourth most common type of cancer in women, gynecologic cancer effects approximately 1 in 20 women. In fact, 82,000 women are diagnosed with gynecologic cancer annually in the United States. Today, thanks to medical advances in knowledge and technology, there are dynamically better treatment options for women than ever before.

What is gynecologic cancer?
Cancers of the uterus, ovaries, cervix, vulva, vagina, and fallopian tubes and placenta are all classified as gynecologic cancers. Normally cells divide in a regulated manner. When cells keep dividing uncontrollably, a mass of tissue forms called a tumor. When this happens in any of the female reproductive organs it is a form of gynecologic cancer.
