Surgical Intensive Care Unit

Overview

Excellence and innovation are hallmarks of the Mount Sinai Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU). Since its founding in 1970, the division has trained more than 160 critical care specialists (intensivists) who have gone on to distinguished careers around the world.

The Mount Sinai SICU is an intensivist-led, multidisciplinary ICU, a model of care that improves patient outcome. Our team provides board-certified critical care physician specialists, in-house physicians in training, and a skilled nursing staff 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This dedicated team provides state-of-the-art care to critically ill surgical, transplant, medical, and obstetric patients suffering from a wide range of life-threatening conditions.

The division has pioneered the use of several leading-edge technologies to meet its patients’ special needs. These bedside innovations include goal-directed echocardiography, lung ultrasound, and other non-invasive monitoring methods.

Our experts provide vascular access for all areas of the institution, and the rapid response team brings critical care expertise to the patient bedside wherever needed. The “ICU without walls” concept has been shown to improve health outcomes. Our intensivists also have broad expertise in blood purification for the critically ill. Patients with declining or failing kidney function receive gentle, continuous cleansing around the clock, a technique that the division has perfected over the last 15 years.
