Colon and Rectal Surgery

Overview

The Mount Sinai Medical Center has a long history of performing colon and rectal surgeries. In 1900, Dr. Howard Lilienthal performed the first successful colectomy for colitis in the United States. In 1932, Dr. Leon Ginzburg and colleagues were the first to recognize and describe Crohn’s disease.

Today, Mount Sinai maintains the most active center for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in the northeast. We specialize in procedures that preserve sphincter function, thus avoiding the need for intestinal stomas and improving quality of life. Our surgeons apply minimally invasive techniques and a multidisciplinary approach to all aspects of colon and rectal surgery.

Mount Sinai’s Colon and Rectal Surgery services include several procedures that are not widely available. For example, our surgeons are among the first and only in New York to perform transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) and stapled transanal rectal resection (STARR). We are also early adopters of the procedure for prolapse and hemorrhoids (PPH).

Our surgeons continue the legacy of excellence that has made The Mount Sinai Medical Center a world leader in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders.
