Treatments

The Radiology Imaging Center at Mount Sinai provides patients with the following services:

Computed Tomography

Mount Sinai Radiology offers a full spectrum of diagnostic CT examinations. CT is an evolutionary procedure, which doctors use to diagnose abnormalities of the pulmonary, gastrointestinal, urological, skeletal, vascular, and central nervous systems. We perform all CT exams at Mount Sinai on multi-detector CT equipment. Highly specialized experts then interpret these exams.

CT Colonography

CT Colonography, or Virtual Colonoscopy, is a relatively non-invasive alternative to conventional endoscopic colonoscopy. Radiology experts use this as a screening test for detection of colon polyps. Our 64 slice multidetector CT scanner produces high resolution images of the colon and allows for extremely fast examinations, minimizing patient discomfort. The images are processed on a computer workstation, providing reconstructions of the inner surface of the colon.

Coronary Artery Scoring

Coronary artery scoring is a CT screening technique that makes use of rapid imaging of the heart, and post-processing computer software, to detect coronary artery calcifications. The number and extent of calcifications are compared with national standards to provide a calcium index, or score, describing the patient’s risk for coronary artery disease.

Low-dose Lung Screening

This is a CT screening technique for patients that are at high risk for developing lung cancer. Low-dose lung CT is used to detect nodules or growths within the lung, while minimizing radiation exposure to the patient.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI, MRA)

Functional MRI studies
Our 1.5 and 3.0 Telsa MRIs generate higher resolution images that enable earlier lesion detection and intervention, and the three-dimensional surface display provides enhanced visualization for surgical and treatment planning. These high performance scanners provide outstanding high-resolution MR anatomic, perfusion, and diffusion neuroimaging, comprehensive MR musculoskeletal and spine imaging, as well as advanced body imaging applications such as MR cholangiography, MR urography, breast, and pelvic imaging.

Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA)
Sophisticated MRA applications can provide high-resolution angiography of the circle of Willis, carotid arteries, aorta, and great vessels, as well as pulmonary arteries, mesenteric vessels, renal, hepatic, and portal vessels, along with the peripheral extremity vasculature. MR Angiography and Cardiac MR can evaluate atherosclerotic disease, congenital heart disease, and cardiac function. Rapid image acquisition and the availability of oral or IV sedation and anesthesia enable studies to be performed on patients with special needs, such as children or claustrophobic individuals.

Mammography

Comprehensive diagnostic breast imaging services include high-resolution, low-dose digital and conventional mammography, breast ultrasound, ultrasound guided core biopsies, needle localizations, and stereotactic biopsy.

Positron Emission Tomography (PET)

We offer the full range of PET studies utilizing a state-of-the-art Advance GE PET scanner. Positron Emission Tomography is a sophisticated molecular functional imaging technique, using a special scanner that displays the functional status of tissues in the body at the cellular level. It is a diagnostic scan that provides metabolic information not available with traditional anatomic imaging modalities such as CT or MRI.

PET can detect changes in cell function or disease long before they are evident as physical or anatomical changes seen on CT or MRI. PET is particularly useful in the evaluation of a solitary lung nodule, lung cancer, colon cancer, melanoma lymphoma, head and neck cancer, and staging of breast cancer. PET is also indicated for the evaluation of refractory seizures and evaluation of cardiac perfusion and myocardial viability.

Radionuclide Tomographic Imaging

Mount Sinai offers the full range of radionuclide imaging procedures, in vitro diagnostic tests, and therapeutic procedures. Imaging is performed with advanced, all-digital imaging equipment and includes bone, lung, thyroid, parathyroid, kidney, brain, infection, stomach, and GI transit imaging, as well as sentinel node imaging, liver-spleen imaging, and kidney function measurement.

Therapeutic (Interventional) Radiology

Using imaging technology, we are able to perform a wide range of procedures to diagnose and treat many disorders, both common and rare. Surgery can often be avoided with interventional procedures. In fact, we are able to treat some disorders for which there is no surgical alternative.

Some of the more commonly performed procedures in Interventional Radiology include uterine artery embolization for treatment of symptomatic uterine fibroids, chemo-embolization for the treatment of liver cancer, and angioplasty and stenting for treatment of blockages of the arteries to the kidneys, or blockages related to other peripheral vascular disease

Procedures are performed following a consultation with one of our board certified interventional radiologists. Most patients are discharged within 24 hours, and often on the same day of the procedure. Our state-of-the-art interventional suite includes full pre-operative, anesthesia, recovery, and observation facilities.

Ultrasound

Mount Sinai’s state-of-the-art equipment provides comprehensive ultrasound services, including routine abdominal, pelvic, obstetrical, thyroid, and vascular studies. Ultrasound guided biopsies, performed by renowned experts, are also available.

General Diagnostic X-Ray

Our full range of diagnostic x-ray studies include chest, musculoskeletal, abdominal, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary x-ray studies. We also offer Arthrography and Myelography. The studies are performed in a digital format utilizing our advanced Fuji CR system and are immediately available on our GE PACS system for review.

Advanced Diagnostic Equipment

We have recently added advanced Siemens 3T and 1.5T MRI scanners, and upgraded two 1.5T GE MRI scanners, a GE 8 slice Multidetector CT scanner, a Siemens 16 slice Mutidetector CT scanner, a GE PET/CT scanner, a GE digital mammography unit, and a GE diagnostic x-ray unit to our already extensive array of imaging equipment.

This state-of-the-art equipment enables us to perform many new, highly sophisticated studies, including MR Angiography, Functional MRI, CT Angiography, CT Screening, oncologic and cardiac PET/CT studies, as well as digital, sonographic, and biopsy studies of the breast.

Our top-of-the-line GE PACS and Fuji Computerized Radiography (CR) system provides referring physicians with remote web access to CT, MRI, Ultrasound, and Diagnostic x-ray studies.
