Hepatobiliary Surgery

Overview

Hepatobiliary surgery has long been a part of the Transplantation Institute, reflecting the patient-centered approach to liver disease at Mount Sinai, in which the management of liver diseases, transplantation, and resection for liver tumors are coordinated among a large group of highly interactive specialists who deliver state-of-the-art multidisciplinary care.

Hepatobiliary surgery has continued to grow and, with the changing focus of practice, was combined with the newly reconstituted Division of Surgical Oncology of the Department of Surgery on July 1, 2005. The past year has been marked by dramatic growth. Physicians have been able to significantly expand activity in hepatobiliary surgery and to begin to develop new areas of expertise for Mount Sinai, initiating a number of exciting clinical programs, conferences, and research projects.

In 2005, 21 laparoscopic liver resections were performed at Mount Sinai, including seven anatomic left lobe resections.

The Mount Sinai Liver Cancer Program was formally established in March of 2005. The program brings together clinicians from surgery, hepatology, oncology, radiology, and pathology along with a basic research team to provide state-of-the-art patient care. The team also works to develop a world-class research program and to translate research findings into clinical practice.
