Liver Diseases
Liver Fibrosis and Cirrhosis

Overview

All chronic liver diseases can cause fibrosis or scarring and lead to cirrhosis when the scar tissue builds up and blocks blood flow to the liver.

Fibrosis is the reason patients with liver disease develop liver failure and may need transplantation. Thus, efforts to stop fibrosis early may prevent complications of all chronic liver diseases including Hepatitis B and C, thereby avoiding the need for transplantation.

Mount Sinai liver specialists use their years of expertise and state-of-art techniques to diagnosis fibrosis. They work with patients and other specialists to manage the underlying cause to stop or slow progression of disease and allow patients to continue with their active lives. When progression can’t be stopped and transplantation becomes necessary, our physicians work closely with the surgeons of Mount Sinai’s renowned Recanati/Miller Transplantation Institute.
