2009 Live Symposium of Complex Coronary and Cardiovascular Cases (June 17-20)
Join us for the 12th Annual Live Symposium of Complex Coronary and Cardiovascular Cases. This Continuing Medical Education program, headed by Drs. Samin Sharma and Annapoorna Kini, brings together more than 500 doctors, nurses, and technicians to learn about the latest developments in interventional cardiology. In addition to our own faculty, this year's guest faculty consists of 23 world-renowned interventional cardiologists from around the globe. This year's symposium will include 24 live cases with panel discussions, which will highlight: treatment of total chronic occlusion; unprotected left main and bifurcation coronary lesions; using left ventricular assist device for support; and treatment of carotid, renal, femoral, and infrapopliteal vascular disease. The primary focus of this live course is to present a multi-device approach to revascularization of patients with complex cardiovascular disease, emphasizing step-by-step intricate details of the procedural techniques, in a safe and successful procedure. Dr. Samin K. Sharma performs over 1500 complex coronary interventions annually (the highest in the country) while achieving an extremely low complication rate. According to New York State Department of Health reports, he has the highest angioplasty success rate (lowest mortality less than 0.1 percent) for an interventional cardiologist in the state since 1994. Under Dr. Sharma's leadership, Mount Sinai Heart has become one of the best and busiest centers in New York, providing excellent care for all types of simple and complex high-risk heart patients. In addition to coronary interventions, Dr. Sharma specializes in the non-surgical treatment of mitral and aortic stenosis (balloon valvuloplasty).
Dr. Sharma serves on the Cardiac Advisory Board of the New York State for coronary interventions that advises the health department and the Governor on issues of health policies and supervision, safety and appropriateness of the heart care by various hospitals in New York. Recently Dr. Sharma received the Governor's Award of Excellence (2006) for his outstanding contributions to medicine.
Dr. Sharma also has passion for teaching and fellows enjoy learning from his expertise, so much so they awarded him the Simon Dack Best Teacher in Cardiology in 2000. Dr. Sharma travels to India four-to-six times a year to teach the art of angioplasty to Indian cardiologists. He is the vice-president of the Rajasthan development foundation and has been donating medical equipment worth one lack Rs/month for last five years to the Chief Minister relief fund to help Rajasthan's people in need. In addition to various academic awards, Dr. Sharma also received numerous awards from non-academic society such as the "Rajasthan Gaurav" given by the Sanskriti organization of Rajasthan and the Rajive Gandhi Memorial Award.
Under the directorship of Dr. Sharma, the Live Symposium of Complex Coronary Cases started in 1998 and has had overwhelming success every year (attended by more than 400 delegates). Major emphasis of the live course has been the technical aspects of safely performing complex coronary interventions involving rotational atherectomy, thrombectomy, and stenting.
Dr. Sharma is widely published on topics of rotational atherectomy, newer interventional devices and drug eluting stents, as well as how to reduce various complications of coronary intervention by the use of beta-blockers and GP IIb/IIIa inhibitors and appropriate techniques for the interventional devices. He is especially interested in discovering ways to treat and reduce in-stent restenosis.
A regular fixture on international, national, local TV stations, newspapers, and magazines; Dr. Sharma has been the focus of news stories for outlets like The Today Show, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, New York Magazine, Barron's, Forbes, Newsweek, The Washington Post, Crain's New York Business, Newsday, New York Post, New York Sun, Earthtimes, India Abroad, and India Today. He has received "Best Doctors" status by US News and World Report and has been included in the "Top Physicians" by Consumer Research Council of America and Castle Connelly magazines.
