The Mount Sinai Medical Center’s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, headed by Dr. Samin K. Sharma, is one of the nation’s best and busiest. Dr. Sharma performs over 1,500 complex coronary interventions annually (the highest in the nation) while achieving an extremely low complications rate.
Dr. Sharma holds, according to the New York State Department of Health, the highest angioplasty success rate for an interventional cardiologist in the state since 1994. The Cath Lab, under his leadership, has established itself as a premiere tertiary center for complex coronary and vascular procedures.
The Mount Sinai Cath Lab has an impressively high success rate for its procedures and an extremely low rate of major procedural complications. It is comprised of four adult cath rooms, one pediatric room, one biopsy room and two electrophysiology rooms, all of them state-of-the-art - each is located on the fifth floor of the east wing of the architecturally innovative Guggenheim Pavilion. The Cath Lab also maintains a separate facility for heart muscle biopsies. We are on call 24 hours/ 7 days a week for treatment of acute cardiac cases.
Unlike many cardiac centers that are facing a decline in the volume of interventional procedures, Mount Sinai Heart has shown a steady growth of more than 1,000 cases per year for the past three years. This growth is attributed to a high rate of efficiency as well as outstanding quality of care, and a very low rate of procedural complications.
With its continued growth the Cath Lab at Mount Sinai Heart is poised to be within the top five laboratories in the nation performing more than 5,000 interventions per year. With its committed staff, advanced technology, and visionary leadership, The Mount Sinai Medical Center’s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory is at the very forefront of advanced cardiological interventional care.
