Services for Victims of Torture

Overview

The Libertas Center is a human rights clinic at Elmhurst Hospital, to serve a need in the borough of Queens, New York. By 2004 United States Census Bureau data, Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, NY, is located in the most diverse community in the country. A relatively large proportion of Elmhurst Hospital's population has fled countries as a result of persecution and torture. Survivors of torture have unique medical and psychological problems linked to their ordeal in their home countries. At the Libertas Center, we provide them with physical evaluations, specialized medical care that they may require, and affidavits of their plight to establish asylum in the United States. Legal referrals are available. We provide training to interested physicians, and involve interested medical students in this process. Awareness of this issue is elevated through lectures and by working with local community centers that assist survivors of torture.
