Emergency Airway Management

Overview

Airway management–the A in the ABCs of resuscitation–is the cornerstone of emergency care. The approach to airway disease at Mount Sinai begins with triage to our emergency resuscitation bay, where specially-trained nurses monitor patients in a critical care environment. In addition to applying the standard set of tools, we provide cutting edge airway management by utilizing advanced airway equipment and techniques such as continuous end-tidal capnography, the Laryngeal Mask Airway, bi-level positive airway pressure ventilation, and the Glidescope. We also have established relationships with our airway consultant services (anesthesia and otolaryngology) that facilitate immediate team-based solutions to complex airway problems. It is, however, the expertise of our emergency physicians, all skilled in the management of airway emergencies, that makes the difference when seconds count.
