About Us

Eating right, staying active, and effectively managing blood sugar levels is Mount Sinai’s approach to helping patients manage diabetes. If diabetes medication is required, our physicians have access to all of the latest safe and effective drugs, including insulin pump therapy.

Mount Sinai understands the devastating impact that diabetes can have on patients and their families. Patients with this disease are at elevated risk of heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and amputations of the lower extremities.  Mount Sinai specialists have expertise in helping patients prevent, delay or minimize the effects of diabetic complications.

Mount Sinai addresses the needs of pediatric diabetes through The Hall Family Center for Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes, which works with children who have both Type I and Type II diabetes, helping young patients and their families adjust to blood sugar testing, meal planning and insulin administration.

Mount Sinai also addresses the special needs of women with gestational diabetes— minimizing the impact of this condition on both mother and child, and reducing the mother’s risk for developing Type II diabetes post partum.

Ninety percent of diabetics have Type II diabetes, which in some cases can be managed successfully with weight loss, diet, and exercise.  The Mount Sinai Weight Management Program provides the support and guidance to these patients.

For some people with Type I diabetes, Mount Sinai’s kidney/pancreas transplantation program offers the promise of a life without insulin injections.

Mount Sinai understands the impact that diabetes has on the community as well. Through the Center to Reduce Health Disparities, we lead the fight against the growing epidemic of this disease with innovative outreach, education programs and treatment management in East Harlem.
