Cancer Radiation Therapy

Overview

Radiation therapy is a localized treatment, similar to surgery, which uses only radioactive beams to destroy the tumor. It is used most often in lieu of surgery if the patient is unable to withstand surgery, or it can be used to alleviate symptoms of metastatic disease. Radiation beams can harm the surrounding tissue; therefore, a limited dose of radiation is often used.
