Diagnosis and Treatment

The Center is committed to delivering the best possible care to people with MS and to providing newer and more effective therapies.

MS, which has a propensity to target young adults (18 to 40 years of age), affects nerves within the central nervous system. The cause of MS is unknown, and there is no known cure. Primarily, it damages the covering or insulation of the nerves known as myelin and is, therefore, referred to as a "demyelinating disorder." MS can affect any part of the central nervous system and cause a wide range of disabilities, from mobility problems to cognitive deficits.

There have been advances in the understanding of MS, allowing earlier and more accurate diagnosis. This, in turn, allows treatment to begin earlier. Since treatment is more effective the earlier it begins, an early diagnosis is important.

New diagnostic techniques using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) have enabled physicians to recognize and begin treating the disease in its earliest stages.
