Dr. Patel joined the faculty at Mount Sinai in 2001 as the Director of the Endovascular Neurosurgery and Interventional Neuroradiology Program. He brings a unique experience to the program in that he is an operative neurosurgeon who is also trained in interventional neuroradiology. An expert in the vasculature of the brain and spine, Dr. Patel is one of a small group of physicians in the country who practices neuroendovascular therapy/interventional neuroradiology, a specialty in which imaging techniques are done in conjunction with minimally invasive procedures, often as an alternative to traditional 'open' surgery. He specializes in the minimally invasive treatment of brain and spinal disorders using endovascular techniques that are creating new treatment options for a broad range of conditions, replacing long and difficult traditional surgeries with low-risk interventions that allow patients to go home the same day or following day. When indicated, he also performs open surgery for cerebrovascular disease and general neurosurgery. His specialty interests are cerebrovascular surgery, endovascular therapy, intracranial aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, carotid stenosis, stroke, spinal compression fractures, spinal AVM and tumor embolization. Dr. Patel is active in organized neurosurgery and holds positions in national organizations. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Joint Section on Cerebrovascular Disease and of the American Heart Association Guidelines Writing Group on Subarachnoid Hemorrhage. Dr. Patel is Chairman of the AANS Cerebrovascular Section Scientific Program and also serves on the International Stroke Scientific Program Committee.
