The Bone, Joint and Spine Program at Mount Sinai encompasses a wide range of disorders, including any condition or injury that may affect the musculoskeletal system.
Patients with back pain are treated by our expert neuromuscular and orthopaedic specialists, utilizing the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. If surgery is required, the renowned Orthopaedic Spine Surgery Program at Mount Sinai offers specialized expertise in all type of surgery for disc herniations, spinal stenosis, tumors, fractures and other conditions. Our spine surgeons are acknowledged leaders in their field.
Mount Sinai is at the forefront in the use of minimally invasive surgery, allowing for less post-operative pain, reduced scarring and a faster return to normal activities.
When rehabilitation services are required, we offer a comprehensive range of services—from acute care and inpatient rehabilitation to outpatient therapy and community follow-up. Our skilled professionals work with patients to set functional goals, communicate regularly with the patient’s referring physician and provide the latest equipment required for the fastest possible recovery.
Mount Sinai’s leadership in bone, joint and Spine care is exemplified by our specialized services such as our outpatient hand therapy program. Our occupational therapists treat acute, post-surgical and chronic conditions of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand. Treatment plans may include the design and creation of custom made orthotics for a variety of conditions.
Mount Sinai has deep expertise in joint replacement surgery, including hip, knee and most recently, total ankle replacement. In cases where total ankle replacement is indicated (as in some cases of severe ankle arthritis) the procedure, which utilizes the superbly designed and constructed ‘agility’ ankle replacement, has proven itself to be remarkably effective, with some patients showing good functioning up to fourteen years post-surgery.
Patients who have lost limbs to diabetes, trauma, circulatory disorders, tumors or congenital conditions benefit from Mount Sinai’s comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to treatment in our outpatient post-amputation program. Our forward-thinking program provides extensive training in limb and prosthetic care and management, as well as easy access to qualified prosthetists to assist with maximizing prosthetic selection and functional capacity.
Mount Sinai’s approach to injury prevention includes an innovative program known as “Back School.” Patients who are referred by their primary therapist may participate in the 90-minute program designed to educate patients in the basics of spinal mechanics as well as how to employ the correct postures for lifting, sitting, standing and sleeping.
It is estimated that one in every seven people has some form of bone, joint or Spine impairment. Our caring team of physicians, nurses, physical therapists and other specialists work with patients at every stage of life: children with congenital defects, trauma or handicaps; people with sports injuries; and older patients who may have osteoporosis, arthritis or hip fractures. Each patient’s needs are unique, and every treatment plan is carefully tailored to meet every individual’s needs. However the goal remains unchanged: to restore the highest level of functioning and independence possible, and to eliminate or minimize pain for each patient.
