Eric Smouha, M.D., F.A.C.S. joined the faculty of Mount Sinai School of Medicine in June, 2005 as Associate Professor of Otolaryngology and Director of Otology and Neurology after spending 15 years at SUNY Stony Brook. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the American Otological Society, the American Neurotological Society, the Triological Society, the North American Skull Base Society, and a recipient of the Certificate of Honor of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
His clinical and academic interests span all aspects of otology and neurotology. He has performed over 400 surgical operations for cholesteatoma, and he has given instructional courses on cholesteatoma and on complications of otitis media at the American Academy of Otolaryngology--Head and Neck Surgery and in Graduate Education at Mount Sinai.
He has published papers on the management of cholesteatoma in the normal hearing ear, and he has developed innovative techniques aimed at conserving function in cholesteatoma surgery. He has also conducted basic research on enzymes that regulate cholesteatoma, and on three-dimensional imaging of the temporal bone.
Dr. Smouha has done pivotal basic research in hearing preservation surgery of the inner ear. He established a thriving Cochlear Implant program at Stony Brook, which helped restore hearing to many deaf adults and children, and is developing a similar program at Mount Sinai. He has also performed hundreds of successful stapedectomy operations for the treatment of otosclerosis, as well as newer implanted hearing devices including BAHA.
He has treated hundreds of patients with dizziness and balance disorders, and written on the treatment of benign positional vertigo and Meniere's disease. At Mount Sinai, his goal is to develop a multi-specialty balance center.
Dr. Smouha has expertise in the treatment of acoustic neuromas and diseases of the skull base. His meta-analysis on the conservative management of acoustic neuromas was recently presented at the North American Skull Base Society and published in the journal Laryngoscope.
Dr Smouha is listed in the Best Doctors in America database.
