Dr. Levine is a Professor of Neurology and Director of Cerebrovascular Education Program at The Mount Sinai Stroke Center. His research interests include thrombolytic therapies for acute ischemic stroke, the role of antiphospholipid antibodies in cerebrovascular disease, and the development of telemedicine systems for acute stroke management and treatment. He was a local principal investigator for the NIH funded NINDS rt-PA Stroke Trial that led to FDA approval of the first treatment for acute ischemic stroke " tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). His research has been NIH funded for the past 15 years (and has continued funding through June, 2008). He has actively trained stroke subspecialists (fellows) since 1987. He is the editor of the National Stroke Association's Stroke-Clinical Updates and serves on the Editorial Boards of Stroke, Neurology, Clinical Neuropharmacology, Seminars in Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease, and Medlink.

Dr. Levine is a 1981 graduate of the Medical College of Wisconsin and served his residency in Neurology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He completed his subspecialty training in cerebrovascular diseases and stroke at the NIH-Designated Center for Stroke Research at the Henry Ford Health Science Center in Detroit, Michigan. He has previously served on the faculty of the University of Michigan, Case Western Reserve University (Detroit Campus), and Wayne State University.

He is an active consultant to the NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, American Heart/Stroke Association, and is a consultant to the pharmaceutical industry. He just finished a 4-year term reviewing training grants for the NIH (NINDS). He has published over 130 peer-reviewed articles, 42 invited contributions/reviews, 7 editorials, 50 book chapters, and 3 books in the field of stroke. He was an invited panelist for Acute Stroke Treatment: New Insights into Administering- A Live Interactive National Satellite Broadcast Conference conducted by the American Stroke Association in Chicago, Illinois. While in Detroit he conceived and implemented a comprehensive stroke risk assessment and prevention (STRAP) program.

Research

The role of anti-beta-2-glycoprotein-I antibodies and antiphosphatidylserine antibodies in predicting recurrent stroke and thrombo-occlusive events following a first ischemic stroke.

Developing the application of telemedicine (real time video-audio telecommunications) to stroke (Telestroke).

The role of hemostatic markers in predicting hemorrhage, treatment response, and outcome following recombinant tissue plasminogen activator therapy for acute ischemic stroke.
