A native of South Africa, Dr. Coomer earned her medical degree at the Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Southern California. She fulfilled her general surgery residency training at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences Medical Center in New York, where upon completion, she was appointed to the staff as an attending surgeon and an assistant professor of surgery. Prior to joining Mount Sinai, she was a member of the attending staff at Lenox Hill Hospital.
Dr. Coomer specializes in breast health and is involved in community awareness surrounding breast disease. She emphasizes the importance of the appropriate treatment of breast cancer along with a superior cosmetic outcome, as both factors have a significant impact on a woman's ability to resume a normal life. Working in conjunction with our Division of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Coomer offers skin-sparing or nipple-sparing mastectomies with immediate reconstruction, for patients who require removal of all breast tissue. She is also a Health Contributor to Fox and FOXNews.com. Her clinical research and news reports are focused around women's health, specifically breast cancer and breast health at all ages. Additionally, Dr. Coomer is experienced in providing partial breast radiation using the newest technology in breast cancer as well as minimally invasive breast procedures and ultrasound-guided MammatomeTM (or vacuum-assisted) biopsies, which we will be providing here at Surgical Associates.
