Dr. Faries was recruited to the faculty at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine as the Chief of Vascular Surgery and Professor of Surgery and Radiology in September, 2007. In his role as Chief, Dr Faries has assumed responsibility for the clinical and academic stewardship of the Vascular Division. He directs the 12 vascular surgeons who are on faculty as well as the medical and administrative ancillary staff. He is responsible for the vascular surgery fellowship and vascular surgery residency programs. He oversees the performance of 9 clinical trials for developmental treatments in vascular surgery and has served as the national principal investigator. In his NIH-funded research laboratory Dr. Faries directs a 5-member team investigating the use of stem cells to treat aortic aneurysms. He manages the vascular outpatient clinical facilities, ambulatory surgery center and the treatments performed therein. Prior to joining the faculty at Mount Sinai, Dr. Faries was the Site Chief of Vascular Surgery and Associate Professor of Surgery in the Tenure track at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. In addition he served as the Chief of Endovascular Surgery for both the Cornell-New York Hospital and Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital from 2002-2007.
Throughout his career at each of these institutions, Dr. Faries has established an outstanding reputation for his tireless commitment to his patients' well being and remains the strongest possible patient advocate. Dr. Faries' clinical skills are universally regarded as extraordinary. He has established a national and international reputation as an innovator in minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of vascular disease. He has traveled throughout the U.S. to present distinguished invited lectures at a wide variety of scientific meetings and symposia. He has been invited to lecture on the findings of his clinical research at vascular surgical meetings as a guest professor in Europe, Asia and Australia. His vascular surgical practice has attracted numerous patients from throughout the United States as well as from Europe, South America, the Middle East, Asia and India. His practice has focused on percutaneous transluminal angioplasty for the treatment of carotid artery stenosis, renovascular hypertension and lower extremity ischemia as well as endovascular treatments for abdominal aortic aneurysms. Through his teaching efforts Dr. Faries has trained medical students, physician assistant students, surgical residents and vascular fellows. He has organized a formal, 3-month post-graduate fellowship for practicing vascular surgeons intent on learning the techniques of minimally invasive vascular surgery. This program has been successful in training 17 practicing vascular surgeons from around the country, allowing them to provide the most appropriate care for their patients.
Dr Faries has received awards and honors in surgery research including the Lifeline Award, 2003; the Peripheral Vascular Surgery Society Educational Grant, 2002; the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery Research Award, 2000; The von Liebig Foundation Award of the Society for Vascular Surgery, 1995. He is the author of over 140 original manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, as well as the author of numerous book chapters, book reviews and published abstracts. He has presented his research at 270 national, international and regional meetings. He is a member of 21 professional medical societies and has been elected to the position of officer in 4. He has been asked to serve on the editorial board of the most prestigious periodical in vascular surgery, the Journal of Vascular Surgery and serves on the editorial staff of 13 additional medical journals. He is a tireless clinician of the highest caliber who has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to teaching and education. His pioneering clinical work has served to lead the ongoing transition to the minimally invasive vascular surgical techniques that have been of tremendous benefit to patients.
