Dr. Carlson's research focuses on the quality of healthcare services in the end of life. In past research, she has examined the impact of ownership and other organization-level factors on the delivery of hospice care and access to hospice services. She has also evaluated the impact of hospice care on caregivers of the terminally ill. Her formal research training includes a Ph.D. from Yale University with emphasis in health economics, health policy, and statistical methods in health services research.
Dr. Carlson is the recent recipient of a Brookdale Leadership in Aging Fellowship and an NIH Career Development Award for which she will be studying access and quality of hospice care nationally. The goal of these projects is to identify where gaps in the availability of hospice care exist and to highlight the strategies and processes employed by high-performing hospices with the goal of disseminating this information to improve the quality of hospice care.
