Dr. Nelson received her A.B. from Smith College and her J.D. from Harvard Law School. She then went on to receive her M.D. from New York University School of Medicine. She completed her residency training and her fellowship in pulmonary/critical care medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Nelson's research interests include palliative care in the intensive care unit (ICU) and she has initiated studies on symptom burden and other sources of suffering in chronically critically ill long term ventilator-dependent patients. Dr. Nelson has been the recipient of a Project on Death in America Faculty Scholars. Additionally, she was recently named the 2002 recipient of the Roger C. Bone award for Advances in End-of-Life Care, given by the CHEST Foundation of the American College of Chest Physicians, and she received a career development award from the American Lung Association to study decision making by patients and surrogates confronting decisions about tracheostomy and prolonged mechanical ventilation. Dr. Nelson has published several papers related to palliative care in the intensive care setting.
