Virus-host interaction, viral immunity, HIV, HCV, Cell signaling and gene regulation
Our laboratory is interested in understanding the interaction between virus and immune system at molecular levels using proteomic and functional genomic approaches. We have recently demonstrated that defensins, small antimicrobial peptides, can control HIV infection by direct inactivating the virion and importantly by modulating cell signaling pathways in the target cell. Our current researches focus on dissecting the role of defensins in HIV pathogenesis. We are investigating the mechanisms by which various defensins inhibit or enhance HIV infection as well as how toll-like receptor activation regulates gene expression of defensins and subsequently affects HIV replication. We are also interested in understanding how HIV infection enhances HCV replication at the molecular basis. These studies will provide insights into immune systems in response to viral infection and offer potential novel targets for antiviral drug design.
