Dr. Akhavan is a board certified dermatologist and has authored numerous articles published in a variety of medical journals, as well as two textbook chapters on therapeutics in dermatology. He is part of the faculty in the Department of Dermatology at The Mount Sinai Hospital, and is involved in teaching Mount Sinai Dermatology residents and medical students.
In addition to his interests in medical and surgical dermatology, Dr. Akhavan has had extensive training in Cosmetic Dermatology, including the use of Botox, injectable fillers, and chemical peels for facial rejuvenation, and the use of a variety of lasers. He has also had specialized training in Digital Mole Analysis, a process that combines total body photography with a procedure called epiluminescence dermatoscopy, in order to more fully analyze moles and follow them over time for change. Digital Mole Analysis has the potential to diagnose melanoma at an earlier stage, and to decrease the number of biopsies of non-cancerous moles that a patient is subjected to.
