Research

The Chronically Critically Ill

Most patients admitted to intensive care units either recover or die within the first few days of the onset of critical illness. However, a subgroup of critically ill patients enters a more prolonged phase with a continuing need for mechanical ventilation and intensive nursing care that may last for weeks to months. These patients have been termed the chronically critically ill. My main research interest is devoted to improving the outcomes of these patients.

Current clinical studies include:

  1. Anemia in Chronic Critical Illness
  2. Hip Fracture Risk of Survivors of Chronic Critical Illness
  3. A Prediction Model of Tracheotomy in Mechanically Ventilated Patients

In addition, the Medical ICU is an active participant in national and international multi-center trials in acute critical illness. Ongoing studies include:

  1. A Prospective Study of Anemia of Critical Illness & Transfusion in Critically Ill Patients
  2. Sepsis Trials
