Research
Diffuse lung diseases which have focused both on the role of the Kveim reagent in the diagnosis of sarcoidosis and its use as the only in vivo model of sarcoid granuloma formation
Our laboratories have examined the immunol ogical cascade initiated by the Kveim reagent. In collaboration with national and international groups we are presently investigating the specific immunological response at the cellular and molecular level. The Mt. Sinai sarcoidosis laboratories have vig orously pursued the etiologic agent of sarcoidosis. Using the Kveim reagent and sarcoidal tissues we are attempting to identify a specific etiologic agent and recapitulate the disease in an appropriate animal model. We have a long history of the study of other "interstitial" lung disease including pulmonary asbestosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and pulmonary disease secondary to connective tissue diseases such as scleroderma and rheumatoid arthritis
