Elton Strauss is a senior member of the academic Faculty at the Mount Sinai Medical School Department of orthopaedics. His academic rank is Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Strauss has been in practice over 30 years, during which time he has dedicated himself to the treatment of the most difficult cases involving fractures and arthritis, and joint replacement. As a tertiary referral physician, many surgeons in the tri-state area refer their complicated cases to his service. Dr. Strauss has shown his expertise in performing reconstructive procedures utilizing the most modern techniques. These include the use of uncemented implants, allograft materials for structural support and state of the art metal prostheses.

His excellence in these areas gained him admittance to the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, as well as the Orthopaedic Trauma Association. Entrance into these societies is based on recommendations by colleagues in the field. Dr. Strauss is Board Certified and has passed exams given by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has received the Additional honor of being admitted to a society commanding the highest respect in academic orthopaedics-the Academic Orthopaedic Association.

Dr. Strauss is the Associate Chief of the Orthopaedic Geriatric Hip Fracture Service at Mount Sinai; the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has appointed him Chairman of the Committee on Aging. In May, 2001, he gave one of the keynote addresses on the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee to the American Geriatric Society meeting in Nashville, Tennessee. He sits on the Council on Education for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Strauss has performed a great number of primary and revision total joint replacements of both hips and knees. He is one of the principle surgeons at Mt. Sinai using ceramic total hips. As a reconstructive surgeon, he has performed multiple procedures for fractures as well as the complications of nonunion and malunion. These include fractures of the upper and lower extremities. Problems involving osteomyelitis and limb-lengthening are subspecialties that he has acclaimed in both nationally and internationally.

Elton Strauss has been recognized by many national societies in peer review journals and textbooks. His use of low-intensity ultrasound to stimulate bone healing has been reported at several national and international meetings. This technique, which had its early pioneer work advanced at Mount Sinai, is used to enhance fracture and nonunion repairs.

Orthopaedic surgery has played an intrinsic role in computer-assisted, robotic-assisted and navigational and image-guided technology. Recently, Dr. Strauss participated in two international seminars that were instrumental in the release of a navigational hip replacement and computer-assisted reconstruction device of the femur. Both of these technologies have their home at Mount Sinai and have been integrated in Dr. Strauss' technique in hip replacement surgery and knee replacements. This allows Dr Strauss to perform these procedures with precision and through minimally invasive incisions.
