Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine

Patient Services

The lungs are vital organs. When they become diseased, the amount of oxygen required for life is diminished and our overall health declines. While some diseases of the lungs currently have no cure, many can be managed to improve quality of life.

Like the other chronic diseases, lung disease doesn’t just “go away,” nor does it improve without medical intervention. It’s important to remember that lung disease of any sort can seriously affect other organs and systems in the body.

No matter your age, level of activity, or general health, early diagnosis and treatment of lung disease is vital to life itself. Studies – including our own investigations -- show that early and aggressive treatment of many lung disorders can limit disability and keep patients active and working. Timely treatment also helps avoid potential complications, and may help delay or prevent the need for surgery.

When it comes to lung cancer and precancerous lung conditions, early intervention may significantly improve lifespan. Patients requiring hospitalization for treatment of lung disease or sleep disorders are admitted to The Mount Sinai Hospital. There, physicians from the P-FPA work with multidisciplinary inpatient treatment teams to ensure that our patients’ medical, nutritional, and psychological needs are met during their hospital stay as well as after discharge.
