Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine

What We Do

At the Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine Faculty Practice Associates, we treat patients suffering from a variety of common respiratory problems such as asthma, COPD, chronic bronchitis, emphysema and lung cancer. We also offer pulmonary rehabilitation, advanced lung disease management, and lung transplantation.

We treat patients suffering from inherited disorders such as cystic fibrosis as well as rare lung disorders. Of course, we routinely treat acute and chronic respiratory infections, as well as more than 130 disorders characterized as interstitial lung disease. (Interstitial lung disease, or ILD, is a broad category that includes more than 130 pulmonary disorders characterized by scarring (“fibrosis” or inflammation of the lungs).

We help staff the largest center for the treatment of sarcoidosis in the world. This program is currently among the country’s ten Centers of Excellence chosen by the National Institutes of Health to study the causes and treatment of sarcoidosis.

Through Mount Sinai’s Center for Sleep Medicine, we treat a wide variety of sleep disorders including sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome.

We frequently work with colleagues in other specialties to manage the care of patients who suffer complications that may affect multiple organs and organ systems. For example, many patients suffering from autoimmune diseases like scleroderma, progressive systemic sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, polymyositis, and dermatomyositis often present with complications that affect their breathing.

When we diagnose patients and determine that the cause of their lung illness may relate to autoimmune disease, for example, we then refer them to our specialty colleagues here at Mount Sinai, many of whom are recognized as experts in their fields. The same is true for other conditions as well.

Therefore, in the course of diagnosis and treatment we frequently consult with thoracic surgeons, radiologists and pathologists as well as immunologists, oncologists and cardiologists to provide targeted, multidisciplinary approach to patients requiring a team-based approach to their care. Routine access to so many qualified professionals is one of the major benefits of seeking specialized healthcare in a large multidisciplinary center like The Mount Sinai Medical Center.
