Prostatitis

Prostatitis is specifically defined as inflammation of the prostate.

The clinical diagnosis of prostatitis, however, is expanded to include a broad range of conditions that ultimately lead to bothersome urinary symptoms including urinary frequency, urgency, pain during voiding or sexual activity, and discomfort in the pelvis and/or pain in the area between the scrotum and the rectum - an area called the perineum. In this group of conditions, as opposed to in BPH, obstruction to the flow of urine is not considered the primary cause of the symptoms; rather, it is inflammation.

Prostatitis can be a frustrating condition for both the patient and the urologist, because the cause and remedy of the condition can be elusive. The Deane Prostate Health and Research Center offers comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for this difficult problem.
