The Prostate Interactive Education System (PIES)
The Barbara and Maurice Deane Prostate Health and Research Center is dedicated to research and a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of prostate cancer. We understand that patients often have a difficult time deciding about the treatment that is best for them. The Prostate Interactive Education System (PIES) is an innovative tool designed to help newly-diagnosed prostate cancer patients weigh their treatment options and make decisions.
PIES is unique because it offers the latest prostate cancer-related information in a user-friendly format. Patients can access PIES through a computer terminal either at the Deane Center or at home via the Internet. PIES provides information in a virtual clinic format. Patients navigate through various locations, such as a library or a physician's office and can have their questions answered by physicians, watch video clips of survivors talking about their experience with the disease, or read information about prostate cancer and the different treatment options that are available. The amount of exploration in any area, or combination of areas is up to the participant.
PIES has been developed by Dr. Michael Diefenbach and his team, with the goal to improve patient education and help with the decision making process for patients and their partners.
