The increase in men’s life expectancy also means that many more men will develop disorders that are associated with aging. The prostate is an organ in men that is affected by a number of conditions as men age: Prostate cancer, for example, is the most commonly diagnosed life-threatening malignancy in American men; Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia - BPH, a benign enlargement of the prostate, is responsible for a variety of serious and bothersome urinary difficulties.
Younger men too may suffer from prostatic problems: Prostatitis is an inflammatory condition associated with urinary symptoms together with prostatic and pelvic pain; Bladder Neck Dysfunction is a neurourologic condition manifest by voiding problems similar to those seen in older men with BPH.
These conditions are the focus of the Prostate Health and Research Center within the larger context of a general concern for men's health and quality of life and a specific concern for the male issues of andropause and sexual health and their relationship to prostatic disease and/or its treatment.
