Graduate Medical Education

The Mount Sinai School of Medicine Consortium for Graduate Medical Education, consisting of 13 institutions located in New York and New Jersey, sponsors more than 140 residency programs in virtually every specialty of medicine, enrolling in the aggregate more than 2,000 house staff. Consortium educational activities provided to all house staff, regardless of home institution or specialty.

Program Overview

The Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery offers one single-year fellowship to a highly qualified individual each academic year. Now in its eighth year, the program provides fellows with well-rounded training in all aspects of colon and rectal surgery.

The fellowship is based at The Mount Sinai Hospital, a 1,171-bed tertiary care center in the heart of Manhattan. Staffed by 1,800 physicians, the hospital serves as the primary academic facility for Mount Sinai School of Medicine, internationally recognized for world-class teaching and research.

Mount Sinai maintains one of the most active centers for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in the Northeast. High surgical volume exposes fellows to a wide range of cases and procedures, working with experienced surgeons who take an active interest in their education. Participants perform a variety of procedures using different techniques—from traditional open surgery to minimally invasive approaches.

All of our graduate fellows have advanced to prestigious appointments and private practices across the country.

Each week, fellows spend one day at the Bronx Veterans Affairs Hospital, where they perform colonoscopy. In addition, they spend one day each month at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn and perform pelvic floor physiology.

Clinical Research

Fellows participate in several clinical research projects during the year and are expected to present their results at a national meeting. Program participants also have numerous opportunities to write review articles and book chapters. Fellows present in General Surgery Grand Rounds and play an active role in the education of Mount Sinai residents and medical students.
