Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the Kravis Children's Hospital have a long history of contributions in pediatric liver disease. The Department of Pediatrics has a distinct division of pediatric hepatology with four faculty members. Frederick J. Suchy, M.D. serves as division chief as well as Chair of Pediatrics. Nanda Kerkar, M.D. is chief of the pediatric liver transplantation service. For the past ten years the division has supported a one year pediatric hepatology fellowship. Over 3000 liver transplants have been performed at Mount Sinai since 1990, 353 of which have been performed in children. Approximately 20 liver transplants per year are currently done in children. There is close collaboration among clinical specialists, including hepatologists, gastroenterologists, hepatobiliary and transplant surgeons, pediatric and liver pathologists , advanced-care nurses, social workers, and patient support staff affiliated with the program. Particular areas of interest include biliary atresia , inherited cholestatic diseases, drug-induced liver disease, viral and autoimmune hepatitis, metabolic liver disease, acute liver failure, and liver transplantation.
