Two positions are being offered for a one-year fellowship which has been designed to provide an intensive experience in general surgical pathology as well as subspecialization in any field of diagnostic surgical pathology. The fellowship is based at The Mount Sinai Medical Center, a large tertiary care academic medical center. The laboratory accessions more than 145,000 specimens annually. Over 6,500 intraoperative consultations are performed per year, and the specimens include both neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases in all organ systems. The fellow rotates on the routine surgical pathology service for six months and is allowed subspecialization in the organ system of his or her choice for the remaining six months. During the entire year, however, the fellow is expected to supervise the gross pathology area and assist in teaching gross dissection techniques to the junior residents. While it is expected that the majority of the fellow’s gross pat hology cases will be dissected by a Pathologist’s Assistant, the fellow is encouraged to actively participate in the handling of larger, more complicated cases. Each of the department’s subdivisions has a wealth of cases deriving both from in house surgery and outreach as well as from external consultations. While on subspecialty rotation, the fellow is exposed to the consultation cases as well as those biopsies and surgical specimens which are designated for signout by the subdivision. Ample opportunity for research projects are available, and participation is strongly encouraged.
