Overview
The Lillian and Henry M. Stratton-Hans Popper Department of Pathology has long offered one of the world’s premiere anatomic and clinical pathology training programs. The department accessioned over 145,000 surgical specimens last year. That's probably the largest specimen volume in the country. This is roughly three times more than any other institution in the tri-state area. Rare specimens that most departments come across every five years or more are seen on a monthly basis here. The program is continuously making adjustments to ensure the highest yield learning experiences for the residents. As an example, the department has recently hired two more Pathology Assistants to ensure that the residents continue to learn from the most interesting cases.
In continuing with tradition, the strong rapport between the pathology and clinical services is continuing to make significant advances in understanding and treating disease. Many collaborative research opportunities exist intra and interdepartmentally. Mount Sinai is home to more of New York’s “Top Doctors” than any other hospital facility in the area. In Castle Connolly's, "America's Top Doctors," which lists 3,415 physicians from hospitals nationwide, Mount Sinai is home to 84 of these physicians, the fifth highest total for any hospital in the book. Mount Sinai (84) was ahead of major academic institutions such as: NYU, Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, and the University of Pennsylvania. Recently, figures released by the federal government show that Mount Sinai School of Medicine has the fastest-growing medical research program in New York with over $156 million in NIH grants in 2003. This confirms that Mount Sinai is on the right track to providing an environment for unmatched training in research and diagnostic pathology.
Mount Sinai promotes several local cultural and entertainment opportunities to enjoy as well. The Recreation Office offers significant discounts on such things as theater, restaurants, and sporting events.
