Program Overview

The candidate should have completed training in Anatomic Pathology (AP), or Anatomic - Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) that included rotations through a division of Gynecologic Pathology.

The duration of the fellowship is 12 months. During this period the fellow participates to the three main activities of our Division:

  1. Service to patients: The fellow is present at all sign-outs of surgical specimens and biopsies from clinics and private offices. The fellow is in charge of training the rotation residents in the gross sampling of gynecologic specimens, interpretation of clinical histories, investigation of prior biopsies or surgical specimens. The fellow is in charge of all consult cases from other institutions, accessioning and active participation in diagnoses. During the periods when the resident is not available, the fellow takes over the sampling and sign-out of all gynecologic specimens.
  2. Teaching: The fellow gives weekly conferences to the residents in pathology as formal didactic sessions and case presentations. The fellow meets with residents and fellows from the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Science and from the Division of Gynecologic Oncology to present cases, to do clinical pathologic correlation, and to teach gynecologic pathology.
  3. Research: The fellow is encouraged to participate in the research activities of our division. That includes histological and immunocytochemical investigations of ovarian tumors, special studies of prophylactic oophorectomy specimen studies, morphometric studies and computerized image analysis, as well as microdissection of ovarian tumor tissue.
