Program Overview

The Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) Fellowship Program under the leadership of Joanne Stone, M.D., at The Mount Sinai Medical Center is a well-established program that has been fully functioning since July 1983.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers a three-year fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine. Our fellows develop competence in the diagnosis, treatment and management of medical and obstetrical complications of pregnancy. Such complications include maternal medical complications, obstetrical (antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum) complications, as well as fetal diagnosis and therapy.

One of the major strengths of our fellowship program lies in the training in prenatal diagnosis and management of a wide variety of maternal and fetal problems. Our division received international recognition for work at the forefront of this arena. A large clinic service provides a wealth of material about a wide spectrum of high-risk problems in the pregnant patient. This clinical material, together with our close relationship with several other services, particularly genetics, neonatology, pediatric cardiology, pediatric surgery and OB anesthesia provides our fellows with an excellent opportunity to become well-trained subspecialists and consultants for managing high-risk pregnancies. We have an outstanding faculty with a variety of interests, including research, genetics, infectious diseases and maternal medical condition.

Finally, the intellectual and laboratory resources at The Mount Sinai Medical Center provide a superb milieu for innovative research.

It is therefore not surprising that most of the graduates of our fellowship to date are full-time academic members of obstetrics and gynecology university departments, practicing as maternal-fetal subspecialists.
