This course introduces the residents and health care providers to the problems facing mothers and children in developing countries. Students will learn how biological, environmental, and societal issues affect women’s health, the outcomes of pregnancy, and child survival. Topics include reproductive and obstetric health, women’s rights, gender-based violence, female education, sex trafficking, HIV/AIDS, malaria, and the public health interventions proven to positively address these issues. Students will be involved in intensive small group problem solving exercises. A high degree of independent research is expected from students as class time will focus on exploration and discussion of previously assigned questions. Guest lectures and film-based discussions are also principle components of the course.

Students will learn the necessary skills to generate solutions for maternal morbidity/mortality issues in the developing world. This is a preparatory course for an international elective abroad.
