The fellows are strongly encouraged to become involved in both clinical and bench research. They have one year of protected time dedicated to this but will continue this endeavor throughout their fellowship. Each fellow is assigned a mentor with expertise in their area of interest. They are required to create, institute, complete and present at least one complete project, however, each fellow is typically involved in a few projects at one time. In addition, the fellows are encouraged to aid the residents in their research projects. The division has dedicated funding to aid in completing the projects as well as a statistician for analysis.
