
On Wednesday, June 3, The Department of Neurosurgery held its annual Research Day, featuring two endowed lectures and a series of talks by Mount Sinai faculty and residents. Highlights of the event included:
Visiting Professor Series presents Dr. James T. Rutka. Dr. Rutka is Chairman of the Division of Neurosurgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto. He also directs the Arthur and Sonia Labatt Brain Tumour Research Center. Dr. Rutka’s talk, "Medulloblastoma; Current treatment and future directions," is the first in a series of invited talks by the Department of Neurosurgery. Mount Sinai faculty and staff are welcome to attend; Wednesday, June 17th at 8:00 am in the Annenberg 5 Board Room.
Joshua Bederson, MD, is Named Top Doctor The 12th annual New York Magazine Top Doctors list named Dr. Bederson a top neurosurgeon in New York. The list is chosen by a Castle Connolly survey of board-certified specialists in New York City, Westchester County, Long Island, and portions of New Jersey and Connecticut. Read more here.
Alexis Demopoulos, MD joined Mount Sinai as Assistant Professor in The Tisch Cancer Institute, Department of Medicine and the Department of Neurosurgery, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Neurology. Dr. Demopoulos will be part of the Brain Tumor Program. He has extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of brain tumors, and his clinical and research interests include: care of patients with malignant brain tumors; evaluating new therapies for brain cancer; studying therapeutic vaccines for malignant gliomas; and exploring the basic science of gliomas.
Dr. H. Richard Winn was selected to receive one of Mount Sinai's two Student Awards for Outstanding Clinical Attending Faculty this year. Nominations for the award were solicited from the Mount Sinai student body and voted on by a panel representing all four years. The award was presented on April 23.
Ron Alterman, MD, presented Update on Deep Brain Stimulation for Torsion Dystonia at the 4th Fred J. Epstein Memorial Conference on Pediatric Neurology and Neurosurgery in Eilat, Israel.
Decision Making in Neurocritical Care by Jennifer Frontera, MD, is published by Thieme. The handbook provides a "solid introduction to the evidence-based management of patients in the neurological intensive care unit. Succinct text in a highly accessible bullet-point format details the essentials of history-taking, physical examination, differential diagnosis, diagnostic evaluation, and treatments for a range of neurological problems in the critical care setting."
Dr. Jamie Ullman served on a panel, Guidelines for the Management of Severe Traumatic Brain Injury, for the Treatment Algorithm Project, hosted by the Brain Trauma Foundation in New York.
New AHA Stroke Guidelines
Joshua Bederson, MD led the team that rewrote the American heart Association Guidelines for the Management of Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemmorrhage. The new guidelines were published in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association updating the original 1994 recommendations. The guidelines committee conducted a systematic literature review of all relevant randomized clinical trials published between 30, 1994, and November 1, 2006. The committee’s recommendations were made by applying the American Heart Association’s standard evidence rating scheme to the conclusion s put forth in the articles. Aman B. Patel, MD was a co-author.
