The goal of our residency program is to create physicians and physician-scientists capable of academic leadership. Ultimately, we anticipate that all members of the internal medicine community will become outstanding general internists regardless of their subsequent career plans.
This residency program is designed to create a foundation for excellence in patient centered clinical care upon which lifelong learning may take place.
Because of its superb reputation, the Internal Medicine Residency Training Program at Mount Sinai each year attracts a talented group of medical school graduates from a wide geographic distribution and with diverse educational backgrounds. Many enter with multiple advanced academic degrees.
During residency, clinical rotations are performed in three extraordinarily diverse teaching hospitals:
- The Mount Sinai Hospital, one of the oldest and most renowned teaching hospitals in the country
- Elmhurst Hospital Center, located in the most ethnically diverse square mile in the world
- Bronx Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center
Within these superb facilities, our residents experience the depth and breadth of internal medicine from the routine to the exotic. There is also a strong emphasis placed throughout on providing ambulatory care to diverse populations in an enlightened, caring manner. The program further challenges each resident by offering increasing responsibility for patient care over time, set within a nurturing environment of close mentoring by our faculty.
As an esteemed center of academic medicine, we expect our residents to engage in scholarly activity throughout their training. For a number of years, the Department of Medicine has ranked in the top 20 nationally for funds awarded from the National Institutes of Health. Becoming part of such a valued research enterprise offers each resident extensive opportunity for both basic and clinical research in a wide array of fields.
A unique and well established mentoring program helps guide both career choice and scholarly accomplishment. The Annual Research Conference celebrates the accomplishments of our residents during an inspiring evening held at the adjacent New York Academy of Medicine.
Most of our residency training program graduates pursue prestigious academic fellowships upon completion of the residency, with the purpose of establishing academic careers in clinical/translational research, public health, patient safety, or education.
If your personal and career goals include a desire to make a difference in the lives of a diverse patient population, and if you possess the passion to help your patients and your community while contributing to the advancement of medicine, we hope you will consider joining us in our mission.
