One of the Department of Medicine's primary missions is to educate young physicians to become leaders in patient care, academic medicine, and research.
The Department's General Internal Medicine Residency Program is widely considered one of the best in the country, attracting top graduates from leading medical schools, many with advanced degrees. Applicants are drawn to the program for the opportunity to care for one of the most diverse patient populations of any major academic center. There is also a vast array of research opportunities available in a department that ranks is the top 15 in funding from the NIH. However, perhaps the most overwhelming reasons given for selecting Mount Sinai stem from the fact that our residents clearly enjoy their training, develop close bonds with colleagues and faculty, and receive tremendous support and mentorship from Department leadership.
The Department offers 19 fellowships, providing advanced training in numerous medicine subspecialties. The receipt of five highly competitive NIH training grants is a testament to the quality of our fellowship training. Because our fellowships attract and train some of the best primary care and subspecialist physicians in the country, our graduates are frequently the top candidates for positions on our own faculty.
The rich diversity of basic and translational work within the Department also draws numerous outstanding graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Many of our faculty members serve as research mentors and faculty for Mount Sinai's Graduate School of Biological Sciences.
