The Fellowship Program in Rheumatology at The Mount Sinai Medical Center is a two-year program. In the past, we have had two fellows at any given time, and this practice is expected to continue. The Program has both clinical and laboratory components. The clinical program consists of an active outpatient clinic where a large number of new patients are seen. The fellows are responsible for inpatient consultations; at any given time there are between 20 and 40 patients in the hospital with various rheumatic diseases. In general, the fellows see the inpatients in a purely consultative capacity.

There are no rheumatology floors per se. Fellows also become highly involved with the private patients of Division of Rheumatology staff who are admitted to the Hospital. Close liaison is maintained with the Departments of Orthopaedics, Rehabilitation Medicine, Neurology, Neuropathology, Renal Pathology, and Neuromuscular Diseases. Regular conferences include weekly grand rounds, regularly scheduled lectures, and pathology and radiology conferences. Attending rounds are usually conducted on a daily basis on weekdays. The contents of the Program are considered to be purely eclectic, and a minimum of didactic teaching is done.

During their tenure, all fellows are required to do some piece of investigative work, either clinical or laboratory. The laboratory activities in the Division itself include studies of immunology, DNA, and chemistry, as well as clinical studies of polymyalgia rheumatica, cranial arteritis, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and other connective tissue disorders.

Research opportunities are available in areas of immunology, biochemistry, and clinical studies. Research can be undertaken in association with different individuals within the confines of the Medical Center. Candidates interested in our Program are welcome to meet with members of the Division to discuss with them matters of interest.
