Program Overview

Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Division of Nephrology has an ASN/AST accredited Transplant Nephrology Fellowship for those who wish to specialize in Transplant Nephrology. The mission of this fellowship is to prepare our fellows to be outstanding Transplant Nephrologists and Medical Directors of Renal Transplant Programs.

The one-year nephrology fellowship provides a broad experience in all clinical aspects of kidney and pancreas transplantation in a busy transplant service. During this year the fellow spends a minimum of six months on the inpatient service where they will be involved in the care of renal transplant recipients perioperatively and post-transplantation. In addition, they will be involved in the clinical management of renal-related problems in non-renal transplant recipients.

The Renal Transplant Fellow will attend clinic daily, will be actively involved in the assessment of potential recipients and donors, and will be trained to perform transplant kidney biopsies. In accordance with UNOS requirements the Renal Transplant Fellow will observe a defined number of organ retrievals and transplants. The fellow will have the opportunity to attend and participate in clinical and research conferences in nephrology and transplantation and a specific transplant core curriculum for those training in all aspects of transplantation.

The transplant team has an active research program and the candidate will have the opportunity to participate in research during the second six months of the fellowship.
