Program Overview

The Division of General Internal Medicine of the Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine offers a two- to three-year fellowship designed to prepare young clinicians for careers in academic general internal medicine. The program is supported through a federal Health Resources and Services Administration Primary Care Clinician Research Fellowship and through endowments. Fellows are appointed to the Department of Medicine at The Mount Sinai Hospital and to the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. The fellowship combines rigorous didactic training in clinical epidemiology, health services research, biostatistics and research methods, mentored research activities, teaching, and direct patient care to provide trainees with a firm foundation for successful careers as clinician investigators and educators. Focus areas for faculty and fellows include clinical epidemiology, health services research, evidence-based medicine, health disparities, women’s health, quality of care, medical errors, palliative care, and medical informatics.

A strength of the program is the breadth and depth of research interests held by the many established researchers at Mount Sinai and the tradition of collaboration across divisions and departments that creates abundant opportunities for mentored clinical research. With the support of faculty researchers, each fellow is expected to design, implement and complete a research project and present their findings through publication in peer-reviewed journals and at regional and national conferences. The program has the flexibility to accommodate the various research interests of its fellows.
