Overview
Division of General Internal Medicine faculty have over 50 active research studies across a broad range of patient and population-based research activities spanning the hospital, ambulatory care, and home care settings. Methodological areas of focus include: clinical epidemiology, outcomes research, health services research, quality of care, health disparities, doctor-patient communication, chronic disease management, health beliefs, patient safety, medical errors, prediction rules, evidence-based medicine, medical education, and medical informatics. Specific topics include: asthma, hepatitis C, thromboembolic disease, cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, depression, pneumonia, homebound elderly, carotid endarterectomy, tuberculosis, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, women's health, palliative care, geriatrics, and medical education, among others. The Division's research section is headed by Ethan A. Halm, MD, MPH and includes: full-time clinician investigators, a senior statistician/epidemiologist, research fellows, project managers, and bilingual recruiter/interviewers. Many of the Division's clinician educator, hospitalist, and faculty in the Visiting Doctors Program are also actively involved research. The Division is home to the Center for the Study of Health Beliefs and Behaviors funded by the National Institute on Aging-a joint venture between Mount Sinai and Rutgers University, NJ. It also directs the East Harlem Practice-Based Research Network, a consortium of 11 hospital-based ambulatory practices serving the East Harlem community. We are actively involved in clinical research fellowship training supported by grants from the federal, Health Resources and Services Administration and the New York State Department of Health Empire Clinical Research Investigator Program.
