Program Overview

The Hertzberg Palliative Care Institute at Mount Sinai School of Medicine offers a unique palliative medicine fellowship designed to meet the career goals of physicians from a wide range of backgrounds who are interested in a career in academic Palliative Medicine. Originally designed as the first program in the country which integrated training in palliative care and hematology/oncology or geriatrics, the fellowship is now designed for any physician who wants to combine training in a subspecialty of internal medicine (e.g. pulmonary/critical care, cardiology, nephrology) with palliative medicine. The fellowship is also open to applicants from other related disciplines (e.g. physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, emergency medicine) who want further training in palliative medicin.

The Integrated Palliative Medicine Fellowship at the Mount Sinai Medical Center is accredited by the Palliative Medicine Review Committee (PMRC) of the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (ABHPM) as being in compliance with the Voluntary Program Standards for Residency Education in Palliative Medicine. The first round of applications for accreditation under the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is expected to open in the spring of 2008 and Mount Sinai will be applying for accreditation at that time.

More than traditional clinical fellowships, our integrated fellowships are uniquely designed for individuals who want to be positioned as national leaders in the rapidly growing field of palliative medicine. The program is open to individuals who show academic potential and intend to become successful academic leaders.
