The Mount Sinai International Exchange Program for Minority Students is a unique exchange program that allows interns to work on an important community-based scientific research project in their host country by matching interns with a mentor. The Exchange Program emphasizes collaboration and the exchange of scientific and cultural knowledge in an atmosphere of support for diversity.

Orientation Week

Interns selected for the Exchange Program travel to Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City to participate in an intensive one-week orientation that emphasizes the role that minority professionals can play in addressing health disparities. Orientation modules also address concepts in the ethical conduct of research and cultural competency.

Travel Abroad

After completing the orientation week, interns travel to their host country in dyads (two students per country) to begin their research and international experience. This unique exchange program allows interns to remain in their host country for three months and provides travel and housing expenses as well as a stipend. The Program Director and Coordinator provide all the support necessary to ensure that the intern-mentor fit is beneficial to all parts and that interns are adjusting well to their new environment.

Benefits

Applicants selected for the Program receive the following benefits:

• Paid travel expenses to attend Orientation Week in New York City and to and from the host country
• Housing in New York City during Orientation Week
• Full health coverage for the three months spent in the host country, including emergency evacuation coverage
• Monthly stipend of between $1,000 - $1,900, depending on level of expertise
• Housing stipend in the home country
• Interns are required to dedicate a full 12 weeks to the program.
  

Interns must also submit a report on their research in the form of a scientific paper. The two most outstanding papers are chosen for presentation at an international conference. Both intern and mentor are funded to present their work. Interns and mentors are also asked to fill out an evaluation of the program and the intern or mentor, respectively.
