CA-3 residents interested in pursuing an academic career can participate in our unique Clinical Teaching Track. We offer an elective in which selected CA-3 residents learn the concepts of and gain experience in simulation-based education.

Participants will learn from the top faculty in their field how to operate and instruct through the use of medical simulators—a virtual or lifelike, hands-on environment in which residents practice skills or processes and receive real-time feedback.

During the year the residents participate in simulation-based training that includes leading the third-year medical student clerkship courses, our CA-1 introduction to anesthesia simulations, simulator-based basic physiology labs for our first-year students, and fourth-year elective simulator sessions.

Program Overview

The Mount Sinai Department of Anesthesiology, in cooperation with various other departments in the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, is pleased to announce the Residency Research Scientist Training Program. The principal goal of this effort is to attract and train medical scientists who will be clinical anesthesiologists and independently funded physician scientists. A limited number of highly select anesthesia residents will have the opportunity to work with an NIH funded researcher to develop a career in academic medicine. This new program is a collaborative and interdisciplinary effort at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and includes opportunities in neurobiology, pharmacology and system therapeutics, anatomy and functional morphology, structural and chemical biology, as well as clinical pain, geriatrics, palliative care and anesthesia opportunities.

The elements of the program are as follows:

• Applicants with a record of exemplary performance in medical school who match into the Mount Sinai core anesthesiology residency program will be invited for a secondary application process. Successful applicants will be matched with a leading clinical or basic scientist at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine that fits the applicant's talents and scientific goals. Acceptance into the program is contingent upon establishing an agreement to work with a specific scientist.
• The Program will be administered by a Research Advisory Committee that will review each candidate's progress and establish benchmarks for the research (“work product”) that is expected of each candidate.
• The program will consist of research training that is integrated into the continuum of clinical anesthesia training with adherence to work hour limits as set by the ACGME and the requirements of the American Board of Anesthesiology.
• Accepted applicants will initiate this training after the initial six (6) months of clinical training (CA-1 year) dependent upon satisfactory performance in clinical competence assessments and standardized test score results.
• Program participants must maintain satisfactory clinical performance ratings and standardized test scores, as assessed by the Clinical Competency Committee of the Anesthesiology Residency Program.
• Program participants are expected to demonstrate scientific productivity (e.g., scientific publications and grant applications), as assessed by the Research Advisory Group.
• From the beginning of the CA-1 (PGY-2) year, the participants who are admitted to and remain in the Research Scientist Program will receive an annual stipend of $20,000 that will be in addition to their resident salary as set by The Mount Sinai Medical Center for each PGY level.
• Supplemental support for seed funds, supplies, travel, and additional needs is potentially available, depending upon scientific merit and overall performance in the program. The Chair of the Department will oversee the approval of supplemental support.
• It is expected that participants in the program will continue with additional research training and/or clinical fellowships following the completion of the core residency program so as to continue their careers in academic anesthesiology. Departmental matching funds are available for “starter” grants from the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) and other agencies.
