Student Life

All PREP scholars participate in the extensive orientation program for the pre-doctoral students entering PREP, PREP-MED, M.D., Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. programs during August. The formal orientation program and associate social activities provide an important early opportunity to begin the exciting exploration and enjoyment of a new environment.

PREP scholar may request housing through the Mount Sinai housing system which will place them in housing units close to the campus and to the wonderful recreational and cultural opportunities in the Mount Sinai neighborhood (e.g. Central Park, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Guggenheim Museum).

PREP scholars take advantage of the programming of the Student Council, of the numerous opportunities provided by the Mount Sinai Recreation Office and the athletic opportunities that abound in nearby Central Park and elsewhere in the City. Mount Sinai “PREP alumni” and PhD students have joined students from other biomedical research education programs in New York to found the “NYC Minority Graduate Student Network”. PREP scholars are invited to their activities, which include social mixers, round table forums, career development forums and peer counseling.

Student Testimonial

“Many of my previous professors argued that I did not require more research training and that I was ready for medical school. But after the two years in PREP, I know I made the correct choice in becoming a PREP scholar. This program made me aware of the demands and responsibilities of an MD/PhD student, an accomplishment that no coun-selor, student or program brochure can achieve with such clarity. The more intense graduate-level exposure to science evolved my capability for problem solving and taught me many things about my fields of interest. The option to enroll in graduate courses not only expanded my knowledge of science but also the cohort of people I call colleagues....This not only made me a much more competitive MD/PhD applicant, but now, it made me an even better MD/PhD student than I would have been had I not been a PREP scholar.”
